Reeded vs Plain Leather Sweatbands: Why Every Giusto Band Is Reeded

Hat makers ask us one question more than any other: are your leather sweatbands reeded? Yes, every sweatband we sell is reeded, with a synthetic wire sewn into the bottom edge. Here is what the reed does, how a reeded band differs from a plain one, and why we only stock reeded.

What the reed is

A reeded sweatband has a thin synthetic wire, the reed, sewn into a fold along its bottom edge. It is the ridge you feel when you run a finger along the inside rim of a good fedora or western hat. The reed gives the edge a firm, rounded shape, keeps the band from curling, and lets the hat sit evenly on the head. Our reeded bands are made from full grain leather about 1.7 inches wide and just over 1 mm thick, in a stock length of about 25 inches.

What a plain band does

A plain band is the same leather without the wire. We do not make them, but here is how the two compare. It is softer, folds flatter and sits closer to the felt, so it suits lighter hats, flat caps, straw hats and any crown where a firm rim would feel bulky. It is also the easier one to sew for a first repair, because there is no reed to keep straight.

When to choose reeded

Fedoras, western and cowboy hats, homburgs and any hat that has to hold a crease and a shape: reeded. The reed does part of the work the felt would otherwise do, keeps the fit consistent through the day and gives the interior the finished look customers expect from a hat shop. Almost every rebuild of a vintage felt hat is a reeded band.

Where plain bands are used

Some makers put a plain band in straw and panama hats, soft caps and very low crowns, where a softer edge saves a little height. We do not stock plain bands: every sweatband we sell is reeded, and it is sewn into those hats the same way.

Ferrules: the finishing touch on a reeded band

Where the two ends of a reeded band meet at the back, the reed is cut and its ends are exposed. Sweatband ferrules are small metal tips that slide over those cut ends. They stop the reed fraying and give the join a clean, professional finish. Keep a bag on the bench; they are the detail that separates a shop repair from a home one.

Sizes and lengths

A stock band of about 25 inches covers hat sizes from 6 7/8 to about 7 5/8 once you cut it to the crown and join the ends. For larger heads we stock an XXXL length. If you would rather skip the cutting and joining, we also sew bands to your exact hat size so they drop straight in.

Colours

Black, chocolate, chestnut, coffee, khaki, tan, nude, navy and red are all in stock in full grain leather, all reeded, sold by the piece or in bulk for hat makers. Rustic distressed finishes are there for hats that want a worn look from day one.
